UK visit

Thu, Aug 02 2001 15:00 CET 984 Views
During a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair last Thursday, President Petar Stoyanov discussed the removal of visas for Bulgarians travelling to the UK. Although a decision on the matter was still very far away, and no specific terms could be given, Stoyanov said he was assured that the issue would be given positive consideration.

Bulgaria's prospects for NATO membership were also discussed at the meeting. Blair will be unable to attend the October 5 summit of NATO candidates in Sofia, as it coincides with his Labour Party conference. Stoyanov asked Blair for strong British representation at the summit, as a sign of appreciation for everything Bulgaria had done so far for NATO co-operation.

The general message of the visit was that Britain continued to regard Bulgaria as a friendly nation, which maintained excellent co-operation with the European Union and NATO and deserved assistance, Stoyanov said.
