A unique concert took place last Wednesday when D2, the most popular Bulgarian pop group of the year 2000, sang a song written by one of their fans.

It was the result of a competition dreamed up by BG Radio's executive director Nikolai Ianchovichin. The competition, "Become famous with BG Radio," challenged radio listeners to write the lyrics of a song for their favorite group and submit them to the radio. If their lyrics were chosen they would become famous.

D2 agreed to participate in the promotion and set the words to music. The group was very excited about the idea because it was the first time they had written music to text made beforehand and, as the boys put it, "this is a great challenge" for them. The competition started on May 24 and lasted until June 20. During those 26 days over one thousand suggestions for lyrics were received. The composer and guitar player in D2, Dimitar Karnev took on the task of finding the lyrics that best suited the group and personally read and sorted out the best texts. He even asked for some extra time so that he could make the difficult choice.

"The contestants represented various age and gender groups," said BG Radio's music director Ana-Maria Tonkova and added that most surprising was the fact that not only girls but also boys participated. Among those who sent lyrics were laureates of literary competitions, doctors and even one scholar from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

However, on June 29 when the winner was announced it turned out that Miglena Georgeva, a 20-year-old biology student at Sofia University, had captured the minds of the boys from D2. Her lyrics, written in Bulgarian, impressed the group because they were very light-hearted and cheerful and dealt with everybody's favorite theme - love. The group had to come up with a melody but than was no problem because "as soon as I looked at the lyrics," said Dimitar Karnev, "the melody occurred to me - I wrote it in 20 minutes."

The finished product was presented to fans on July 25 at Battenberg Square in Sofia. Days before the concert the lyrics of the song were printed on fliers and given to pedestrians in the centre of the city. On the day of the promotion it turned out that most of the 3,000 people on the square knew the song and they sang along with the vocalist - Dicho.

That day became an overemotional and unforgettable experience for the young writer Miglena who was present at the triumph of the romantic song called "Me and You" and later dined with the members of the group. They shared a meal at the Hilton Hotel and she stayed there for the night in a luxurious suite. This put an end to a thrilling day in which the young D2 fan saw her dreams come true.
