MPs vote in their raise

Thu, Aug 09 2001 15:00 CET 267 Views
Before disbanding for a month-long summer break last Thursday, Bulgaria's new MPs increased their salaries.

After much controversy on the issue, the MPs finally agreed to what the temporary commission had proposed - that their monthly wages would amount to three average monthly Bulgarian wages in the public sector. This would be based on official statistical figures. Earlier, the MPs' salaries amounted to three average monthly Bulgarian wages in the public and private sectors, which are about 100 leva lower.

Also, for the first time in Bulgarian parliamentary history after the 1989 democratic changes, the MPs will have to announce when they have a direct financial interest in a bill under discussion or when making a speech during plenary debates or within a parliamentary committee. This is among the procedure rules of the 39th National Assembly which were also approved.

Another rule forbade MPs from being on supervisory or managing boards of commercial partnerships and corporations, or to agree to have their position in Parliament used for the purposes of advertising.
