Chivas Regal Summer Terrace Review

California

While it lacks some of the aesthetic charms one may associate with its namesake state, California still provides a decent Bulgarian adaptation.

Situated in what may be referred to as a step away from the middle of nowhere, this patio bar is a good place to stop if you're in the neighbourhood of either Maxi or Easy Club, or work in Interpred. It's located just up the street from the latter, at the corner of Dragan Tsankov and G.M. Dimitrov Boulevards.

My experience there could not have been better. After a rigorous squash match, a beer was definitely in order. The beer garden-type atmosphere of California provided a good venue for relaxation and conversation and the prompt service helped things further.

The spacious patio is filled with large benches that are, in a very un-Bulgarian manner, not crammed together to fit as many in as possible. Small stones carpet the ground and a river of sorts flows through part of the patio. The bar seems to be trying for a beach-like environment, and it almost pulls it off. Unfortunately, this illusion is slightly spoiled by the sound of some of Bulgaria's finest drivers passing by a few feet away.

California is fairly original, but far from being extremely trendy or posh - one look at its prices and you'll see why. Both food and drink are very moderately priced - a bill for two beers, three glasses of wine and two salads came to a mere 11 leva. I guess rent is cheap in the area.

The menu itself includes the standard Bulgarian fare with the odd theme dish, like California salad. I must admit that I was there with more of a liquid snack in mind so I cannot fairly assess the quality of the cuisine.

If you're in the neighbourhood, it's definitely worth stopping by. It may not be the place to take someone new to town, but it's great for some low-fuss food or drink.
