Bulgaria is a strong candidate for NATO membership, according to Canadian Defence Minister Arthur Eggleton. The minister arrived for a two-day official visit to Sofia on Tuesday at the invitation of his Bulgarian counterpart Nikolai Svinarov. This was the first time a Canadian Defence Minister has visited Bulgaria. Eggleton said that even though Canada has not yet decided which applicants it will support at the NATO summit in Prague next year, it favours the idea of NATO enlargement.
He explained that he was making several visits to see how candidate countries were progressing towards membership. Co-operation between Bulgaria and Canada in defence and security, and the situation in Macedonia and the Balkans topped the agenda of the meeting between the two defence ministers. The Canadian minister announced that 68 Bulgarian officers would be trained in Canada to participate in peacekeeping operations.
