Schools violate children rights

According to data from the Children Rights Protection Association (CRPA), children's rights in Bulgaria are most often violated at school by their teachers. CRPA chairperson Siya Petrova said on Monday that teachers tend to ignore children's opinions and needs, which is in contravention of the United Nations Children Rights Convention. Violations are less frequent in the family, CRPA data showed. Children in orphanages most often face difficult living conditions.

The CRPA has implemented a project to build public awareness of the need to protect children's rights. A collection of effective laws and regulations on child protection and a short telephone directory with contact numbers for citizens' reports on child abuse have already been published.

The project was funded by the Canadian Embassy for Romania and Bulgaria, Petrova said. A total of 3,000 leaflets were published and 250 of them were presented to schools in Sofia, as well as a number of NGOs.
