Opportunities to boost Swedish investment in Bulgaria were discussed at a meeting between Economy Minister Nikolai Vassilev and the executives of 15 Swedish companies at the Swedish embassy in Sofia on Wednesday.

"Swedish investment in this country is quite insignificant - $8 million," Vassilev told the meeting. Fison Invest (a potential investor in the Varna Shipyard), SKF (which is interested in acquiring the Sopot bearings plant), Astra Zeneca and other companies were represented at the meeting. They have been present on the Bulgarian market for 20 years but have not yet built any production facilities.

The Swedish executives complained about the heavy administrative procedures, the lack of special incentives for foreign investors, and the brain drain.

Some 60,000 Swedish tourists spent their holidays in Bulgaria this summer, Vassilev announced. He expressed hope that by the end of the present government's term of office, the annual influx of Swedish tourists would reach 100,000.

Ambassador Sten Ask said he is optimistic about the country's economic development under the present government and predicted that the annual volume of direct external investments may rise from the current $1 billion to $5 billion.
