Bulgaria's female volleyball team won the bronze medal at the 22nd European championships on Sunday, after a tournament which ran from September 22-30 in Varna and Sofia.

Before some 3,000 spectators in the Varna Palace of Culture and Sports, the Bulgarians achieved their best result since 1981, when they won the European title in the championships in Sofia.

After the decisive match for the bronze medal against Ukraine, which Bulgaria won 3-1, the three stars of the team Toni Zetova, Neli Marinova and Vanya Sokolova announced that they had played their last match for the national volleyball team and will not take part in the World Championship next year in Germany.

In the heart-stopping 110-minute finals, Russia beat Italy 3-2, and won the first female volleyball cup of the millennium.
