The opening of the new season of the National Theatre Ivan Vazov on Tuesday coincides with its 100th anniversary and will be commemorated with events throughout the coming three years.
Special performances, exhibitions, lectures, contests, charity events, tourist visits and creative meetings will mark the celebration.
The first exhibition of the series was opened on the second balcony of the theatre. All the paintings included belong to the theatre and have never been displayed before. A portrait of Ivan Vazov has been displayed in the middle of one of the building's busier corridors.
"The theatre is a delightful temple," said Yosiv Surchadjiev, a Bulgarian actor, at the opening.
The whole cycle of the three-year program is presented as 100 Years of the National Theatre Ivan Vazov. The first play, performed at the theatre on Tuesday, was Bocaccio's Decameron by Alexander Morfov.
The National Theatre had the first professional Bulgarian theatre troupe in 1904. Since then, it has gained the reputation as the best of Bulgarian performing sites. It has united the literary elite and famous composers and directors. It is offering 25 titles for the coming year, some classical, the rest contemporary, or guest visits from abroad.
"The National Theatre decided to launch the big celebrations with Decameron on purpose," said Elina Kalinova, a theatre spokesperson. Morfov's challenging interpretation reflects the author's challenge to his time and the world, as it was when the piece was written. "He dared challenge it all," said Kalinova. "That is the purpose of the National Theatre now."
The new program also challenges theatre-lovers to make an exploration of the various plays. The three-year plan unites the past, present and future.
One premier of special interest takes place tonight - the lyrical comedy Ghosts in Seattle by Eduardo D. Filipo. According to the director of the performance, Andrei Avramov, Pascuale (Velko Kunev) is a "small man" deprived of courage and faith. "I tried to make the story closer to the reality around," he said. "The fight for survival was the topical issue in Italy after World War II and privations, hardships and misery were everywhere."
The dance performance Peace, by the French choreographer Jan Francois Durur is being performed tomorrow. Ballet dancers, singers, actors and musicians from Western Europe and the Balkans are taking part in the spectacle. Goran Bregovic's music provides the background for the show.
Two experimental performances by Chekhov are planned for the weekend as well. First, Comedy D. Kan's Normandy Theatre will be visiting with a performance of Gull tonight.
The theatre is also hosting Family Circle For Three Sisters tomorrow and Sunday. The performances will be enacted by guests from Normandy.
