Contrary to allegations, Vladimir Grashnov, former executive director of MobilTel, received proper treatment at the Lozenets Hospital, according to the conclusions of a commission appointed to carry out the check.

"There were no violations during the treatment of Vladimir Grashnov at the Lozenets Hospital," read the final statement issued by the commission on Wednesday.

Grashnov died at the hospital on Tuesday at the age of 48. He was admitted to the hospital on September 11, in critical condition.

On Monday, Bulgarian media reported that he had been refused a blood transfusion. According to his relatives, they had been asking for the transfusion since Friday. Monitor quoted Grashnov's wife Lora as saying that the hospital had refused to perform the transfusion.

"An urgent blood transfusion was not necessary," said Lyubomir Spassov, director of the hospital and chief doctor for Grashnov, at a special press conference called on Tuesday. "This is what his medical card showed."

Spassov explained that a request for blood was filed with the Blood Transfusion Centre on Saturday and that the actual transfusion was carried out on Sunday. Spassov refused to reveal Grashnov's diagnosis pointing out that it was "immoral to say it from a medical point of view.

"My medical ethics do not allow me to comment on the diagnosis of any of the hospital's patients," he said.

According to unofficial sources cited in the media, Grashnov was suffering from leukemia or a brain tumour.

Boyko Hristov, head of the press centre of the Ministry of Health, said that the commission appointed to check the treatment did their job as fast as possible. "Minister Bozhidar Finkov ordered the formation of the commission on Tuesday and the results of the check came on Wednesday," Hristov said. He explained that the commission had inspected the entire course of treatment in an attempt to find out whether Grashnov had received adequate treatment.

Grashnov was born on November 24, 1952 in Troyan. He graduated from the Technical University in Sofia, majoring in technology of mechanical engineering. He was the head of MobilTel from the end of 1997 to the end of 2000.

Grashnov was most recently the chairman of the board of directors of the mobile operator and chairman of the executive board of the Levski football club.
