Unions call for protest

The leader of the Confederation of the Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), Zhelyazko Hristov, said on Sunday that he expected a wave of social discontent as the end of the year approaches.

According to him, in late December the cost of living will become unbearable for about 80 per cent of working Bulgarians. This will be the result of the 10 per cent increase of electricity and heating prices, the higher excise duties and more expensive Bulgarian-made medicines.

According to CITUB calculations, the cost of living in December will be 300 leva against 250-260 leva in late August. Presently, some 900,000 Bulgarians are paid a wage of less than 250 leva and nearly 250,000 get 100 leva against a poverty line of 98.76 leva.

On October 30, CITUB will release its assessment of the first 100 days in office of the new government and on November 1 they are calling a rally against poverty and unemployment. Hristov stressed that the aim of the protests will not be to topple the government.
