More support for NATO and EU

More than 45 per cent of Bulgarians tend to disapprove of the U.S. operation in Afghanistan, according to the results of a poll carried out by the National Opinion Poll Centre announced on Monday.

The poll was conducted between October 10 and 15 on 1,486 Bulgarian citizens. Strong negative attitudes were displayed by women (50 per cent disapproval), people over 60 (53 per cent disapproval) and the supporters of the socialist-dominated Coalition for Bulgaria (67 per cent disapproval).

Bulgaria's future membership in NATO has the support of 64 per cent of Bulgarians, 11 per cent more than last year. The traditionally high share of people supporting Bulgaria's aspiration to EU membership has increased further to 82 per cent against 75 per cent last year. Pollsters believe that the increased support for the country's Euro-Atlantic orientation is attributable to regional instability and terrorism. There is a direct link between attitudes to the U.S. strikes in Afghanistan and attitudes to membership of NATO, analysts say.
