Two-time European skating champion Evgenia Radanova (Bulgaria) did not participate on Sunday because she suffered a contusion in the quarterfinal in an 1,000m speed skating qualifying event, held in Calgary, for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. The 25-year-old Radanova sprained her knee joints, but the contusion is not serious.

Although Radanova did not start at the 1,000m, she did gain third place in the overall individual ranking, first in the 500m and second in the 1,500m, and won a place in the winter Olympics. The other Bulgarian, Daniela Vlaeva, placed 29th, but will also take part in the games. A full quota was obtained by the men as well, Assen Pandov with 24th and Miroslav Boyadjiev with 27th place.
