Journalism for Deo, a popular music presenter for Bulgarian teenagers, was something he stumbled into. Otherwise known as Deyan Slavchev, the presenter of the popular television show Jukebox was auditioned by accident by the producers of the weekly music broadcast two years ago.

"I was at work in the El Cabana bar when I was asked whether I was willing to do it, and I appeared to match," he recalled.

What Deo most enjoys about working in television is the ability to be in the field of music at all times. "Working is a pleasure when there is music around, and that is the greatest thing that could have happened to me," he said. His dreams have already come true at the age of 26.

His idol is MTV's Most Wanted presenter Ray Cox. "He always manages to create a show for the spectators by talking with his cameraman and asking questions and giving answers in return. That is what I always aim at," Deo said. For him, this two-person approach is better than the boredom that arises when the presenter is the only one doing the talking.

"I very often improvise and I am not nervous at all, unlike my first broadcasted show," he said. He believes that the funniest parts of any TV show are those which are improvised.

Preparing for an episode of Jukebox usually only takes him about two hours. Most of what he has to add comes in the form of spontaneous reactions. The rest of the job is done by the show's scriptwriters, Niki Kunchev (also the presenter of Getting Rich) and Sasho Zhekov.

They select the music for the program and are quite inventive in terms of writing jokes and monologue, Deo said. He keeps up with the latest on the music market through the club Cutty Sark, where he spends a large part of his time. He also spends time watching the world's different music shows.

"The most essential ingredient in a show like mine is the fun experienced while doing it," said Deo, who added that they recognize what they do is not rocket science, or something which hasn't been done before. He said the team just has to play the most recent music.

When not in front of the camera, Deo enjoys swimming and snowboarding. "If I were not a journalist now, I would have been a bartender," he said. That is the most appropriate job for a person who loves communicating with people, working in a busy and adventurous place, and leaving for home with a lot of money. That's how he explained his love for bartending, which he does not dare compare with Tom Cruise's film Cocktail.

Working in El Cabana made the presenter a sociable person and opened his vision to the world around him. "I learned how to recognize the types of people on entering the bar," he said.

His favourite band is Depeche Mode, and he was even once a member of a hip hop dance formation. One day Deo would like to run his own Jukebox on MTV.

Jukebox with Deo is broadcast on Saturdays at 3.20pm (channel one). He also hosts a Jukebox show on FM+ radio on the weekend.
