Interior Ministry Chief Secretary rebukes football club presidents

Thu, Nov 15 2001 13:00 CET 40 Views
The presidents of the big football clubs were rebuked by the chief secretary of the Ministry of Interior Affairs, Boiko Borrisov, at a meeting on November 5 between club bosses and the authorities for public order. The reason was that football referee Georgi Gospodinov was stabbed with a knife and robbed in front of his home in Stara Zagora the week before.

"You think that you are a state within the state and you have the right to hit, curse, to chase referees in the stadium - your football players are acting like street children. We, though, can change the championship and some of the matches will not be played at all," Borissov said.

Police may refuse to guard matches, which means a stop to the championship because only police can perform this duty.
