Reflecting on a life onstage

Famous Bulgarian pop prima Margarita Hranova reached her 30th anniversary on stage this month and reflected on a life in which she has adored every single event she has experienced.

Her secret to success lies in the natural approach she takes towards others. Starting in 1971 with the Objective trio, she quickly rose to the top of all the competitions she entered abroad as well as in the country. She has attended music events on most continents and has given a part of her in each of them.

Hranova is planning to organise a big celebration around Palm Saturday this year with a concert involving all the singers and actors she has performed with, associates, friends and fans.

"I have been a part of many songs where actors talk for colour and I hum around reaching a great tempo and different rhythm," she said.

She has picked early spring to have a fest since she is an admirer of flowers and nature. Her home is loaded with pots of flowers to which she talks and refers to as her friends.

The first of Hranova's achievements came in 1972 at the first festival she attended in Alexandria (Egypt) followed by a Dresden's hit festival and a tour of Russia, Cuba and North America. She vividly remembers every single concert and award that she was given. She recalled the time in 1974 when she won an award for best singing performance in Warsaw. Her suitcase did not arrive at the airport and she had to sing in a borrowed dress. "I forgot my prior worries, that faded away the moment I set my foot on stage," she said.

Her explanation for the long-term love her fans have given her is the love and affection she puts into all her melodies. Her greatest and most memorable song Zeal, written by Naiden Andreev, is symbolic and precious to her. It launched her and Andreev up the ladder to stardom - her as a performer and him as a lyricist. She even included it in her first appearance on stage as an actress in the musical Casting by Ivailo Hristov.

For her, the song makes a difference even today, 12 years after it came to be. The album With Love tells the story of Hranova's musical career like a curriculum vitae for the fans. "It features all of the songs I have had in my singing career up to 1979," she said.

Hranova said she has always managed to both act and sing due to her enthusiasm for novelties, capacity to work under tight deadlines, and flexibility. "I am extremely ambitious and pursue my goals to the fullest. I am hardly ever discouraged and always get what I waant," she said.

Margi And Friends is her favourite album, combining all of the songs she has performed with friends with emphasis on the duet with Stefan Danailov.

If she could live her life over again, she would have done the same thing, which enriched her through travel, excitement and popularity. "I endow ordinary people with love and sincerity," she said. The only thing that was lagging behind a bit was her attention to her two sons when they were younger, but she is making up for this now with her grandson.

Hranova would like to become a singing instructor for young talents in a private school called Pop Stars. "I would love to prepare children to become pop stars and present the country's potential in festivals in abroad," she said.

On Stage, a documentary about her, will be aired this month on a couple of Bulgarian channels. A pending future project she has is the issue of a golden album with a compilation of her greatest hits and duets throughout her career. The selection for it will be based on her personal tastes.
