The Bulgarian national football team defeated Malta's national team 2-0 on Saturday. The match was a qualifier for the World Cup 2002 championship that will be held in South Korea and Japan.

In Malta's capital, La Valetta, in front of a little over 1,000 spectators, Bulgaria's forward Dimitar Berbatov scored two goals. German referee Hartmut Strempe gave Malta's Anthony Teuma a red card in the 75th minute, and Bulgaria's Georgi Markov and Alexander Alexandrov were given yellow cards.

With that victory, Bulgaria temporarily led the third European qualifying group. All teams in the group have to play two more games before the end of the qualifiers. Bulgaria was to play Denmark at home on Wednesday, and will then challenge the Czech Republic as a guest on October 6.

The youth national teams of Malta and Bulgaria played in La Valetta on August 31 and drew 2-2. Assen Bukarev and Todor Kolev scored for Bulgaria and Karlo Mamo and Victor Belia scored for Malta. The game was friendly and Hungarian referee Zoltan Szarka did not give any penalty cards. After the game with Malta, the Bulgarian youth team retained its second position in the qualification group for the European championship. A victory in the next round on Tuesday would have sent the Bulgarians to the European finals next year.
