BIRD FLU RISK FOR BULGARIA DECREASES IN 20 DAYS

Thu, Feb 23 2006 10:00 CET 441 Views

Though bird flu is a serious problem Bulgaria has not registered infection outbreaks among domestic birds yet, head of the National Veterinary Medical Service Zheko Baichev said.

In 20 days migrating birds will leave the country. After that the threat would not disappear but would significantly decrease, Baichev said.

The dangerous for humans H5N1 type of bird flu virus has been identified in the bodies of four dead swans found on Bulgarian territory, Baichev said. All necessary precaution measures have been undertaken. The places where the bodies were located underwent disinfection, Focus news agency reported.

Baichev said the death rate of swans has increased but ornithologists said this is natural. Bird flu is unpredictable but so far administrators are managing the situation well, Baichev said. All necessary medical supplies are available and the crisis headquarters in all Bulgarian regions co-operate, said Baichev.
