DANUBE RIVER LEVEL INCREASES ONCE AGAIN IN BULGARIA

Fri, Mar 24 2006 11:47 CET 493 Views

The Danube River level near Vidin increased by 30 cm this morning to reach 738 cm, data from the Danube research and monitoring agency shows.

Increase in other regions reached 50 cm, the Bulgarian National Radio reported. In the next week, the river level is expected to continue rising due to the release of significant amounts of water from the hydro-technical facility Zhelezni Vrati.

Once the river level reaches 750 cm an emergency plan will be enforced, representatives of the State Agency for Civil Defence said.

Two of the islands located in the river, Koutovo and Bezimen, are already submerged. Three other islands have been partially covered by the water.

Water from several dams in the country is released under surveillance to prevent overflows once snowmelt begins.
