DANUBE RIVER LEVEL IN BULGARIA CONTINUES RISING

Mon, Apr 10 2006 17:02 CET 460 Views

In the past 24 hours the water level of the Danube River on Bulgarian territory continued increasing.

The registered rise is 14 cm near Novo Selo and 15 cm close to Lom, BGNES news agency reported. Near Rousse the river level is 779 cm, or 41 cm below the critical threshold. The shore has been submerged at more than 330 places.

According to data from the river research and maintenance centre, the Novo Selo harbour, the Archar and Lom piers and a road from Vidin to Lom are under water.

Nearly 1.75 m of water cover the pumping station, located on a river island close to Kozlodui.

A railway station and the Kozlodui, Nikopol and Somovit harbours face a flood danger. Agriculture terrains close to the river could be submerged soon, as well.

The Vidin crisis headquarters already organised emergency groups to deal with the expected danger. The critical threshold, after which evacuation will become necessary is 930 cm.

More than 200 people monitor the river dikes daily. An additional emergency dike was constructed two days ago.
