BULGARIA EXPECTS FURTHER DANUBE RIVER LEVEL INCREASE

Thu, Apr 13 2006 09:00 CET 471 Views

The Danube River level will continue increasing, experts from the river research and monitoring agency said.

Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin called for co-operation from authorities in Romania and Serbia and Montenegro in the implementation of control measures, mediapool.bg reported.

In the coming days experts predict the flooding of parts of Lom. Currently the city's harbour is submerged. The new flood wave is expected to harm the centre of the city. Yesterday morning the Danube level near Lom reached 900 cm. In the next 24 hours the increase is expected to reach 60 cm.

Vidin also faces a flood threat if the dikes fail to hold back the water. Partial evacuation in the city already began.

Mayor Ivan Tsenov recommended the evacuation of all mothers with small children after a meeting of the Vidin crisis headquarters.

Intense rainfalls continue throughout Europe leading to the increase in water level of rivers flowing into Danube.
