DANUBE RIVER LEVEL IN BULGARIA REACHES ALL-TIME HIGH

The water level of Danube River in Bulgaria increased by nine cm in one day, exceeding the critical threshold by 70 cm.

According to expert prognoses the crisis period will continue by the end of the week, Novinar newspaper reported.

In one day the river level near Rousse increased with six cm, reaching the all-time high from 36 years ago. The river reached 888 cm. Dikes close to Rousse have broken at places, representatives of the State Agency for Civil Defence said.

In Lom, the water flooded two hotels, five houses and the city park.

Starting yesterday army teams pump water out of the flooded constructions in Silistra, army chief of general staff Nikola Kolev said. Kolev is in Silistra, accompanying President Georgi Purvanov on his trip to the flooded areas.

The army participates in the Danube recovery works with 460 people and 60 pieces of military equipment. Army teams supervise recovery operations and monitor the most threatened regions.
