CORRUPTION AFFECTS BULGARIA'S EU ACCESSION CHANCES

Corruption and organised crime affect Bulgaria's chances for timely EU accession, Sunday Telegraph reported.

Both negative developments are so widespread that the country's accession should be postponed, representatives of the European Commission said.

The two representatives, responsible for justice developments monitoring said Bulgaria would not be able to deal with such major problems for accession on January 1 2007.

The report of the two officials will not be published before the issuing of the final EC report on Bulgaria's reform progress, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

Klaus Jansen, head of Germany's criminal investigation union said evidence shows Bulgarian officials might be connected to criminal organisations in the country. Co-operation with Bulgarian institutions, after the accession, will be difficult if confidential information could easily reach such organisations, Jansen said.

Bulgarian police is putting effort in positive developments but crime fighting practices in Bulgaria are below European standards, Sunday Telegraph reported.

When it comes to criminal investigation and domestic order Bulgaria is still not ready to join the EU, the article concludes.
