Wed, Apr 26 2006 14:57 CET 716 Views

The Bulgarian police and Finance Ministry will co-operate to limit corruption and financial crime.

Such joint actions in the past led to the uncovering of major schemes, Interior Minister Roumen Petkov and Finance Minister Plamen Oresharski said.

Such crimes drained significant amounts from the national budget, the ministers said during a meeting with diplomats from EU member states.

The Cabinet is ready to implement measures against high-level administrative corruption, Petkov said. In his words, low-level corruption has been taken to a minimum, Focus news agency reported.

Defining clearly lobbying activities will also limit corruption practices. Public institutions and political formations should be distinguished clearly for the aim, said Petkov.

Nearly 890 corruption schemes were revealed in the first three months of 2006. The National Service for Combating Organised Crime (NSCOC) uncovered the activities of eight criminal organisations.

As a result of these developments the access of criminal organisations to financial resources has been limited, Petkov said.
