Bulgaria won its first gold medal from the European wresting championship in Moscow.

Stanka Zlateva defeated Svetlana Saienko from Ukraine during the final round in the 72 kg category, BGNES Sport agency reported.

Zlateva reached the final round after three victories in the previous stages of the tournament. During the first round Zlateva defeated her biggest competition, Anita Schaetzle from Germany.

Schaetzle is a two-times European champion. She ranked third in the international tournament in 2005.

The gold medal is Zlateva's biggest achievement so far. It is also the biggest accomplishment of a female Bulgarian wrestler. Previously Bulgarian competitors won three bronze medals from European championships.
