BULGARIA'S BOYANA CHURCH TO OPEN FOR TOURISTS BY END OF 2006

A fund-gathering campaign for the restoration of UNESCO World Heritage monument Boyana Church has gathered more than two thirds of the money needed, director of the National Museum of History Bozhidar Dimitrov said.

Dimitrov discussed the donation campaign during a press conference together with Sofia Mayor Boiko Borissov, and Culture Minister Stefan Danailov.

Another 140 000 leva are necessary to complete restoration activities, which started 54 years ago.  Arguments about the technology for restoration stopped work in 1998. The process continued on March 13 2006.

The church will open to tourists by December 15. It is 42nd in UNESCO's World Heritage List, which includes 812 monuments. Bulgaria prides nine cultural monuments in UNESCO's list.

Boyana Church is situated in the outskirts of Sofia and is one of the most complete and perfectly preserved monuments of east European medieval art. Its foundations were laid in 1259.
