Agriculture Minister Nihat Kabil is in the Kurdzhali region since July 20, where officials confirmed the first bird flu outbreak among domestic birds in Bulgaria.

Kabil said that the Agriculture Ministry lacked information previously. It was claimed that the ministry knew of the infection but refused to reveal the information, Darik Radio reported.

In four days lab results would reveal whether the virus, found in dead birds from the affected region, is of the dangerous for humans H5N1 type, Darik reported.

Kabil said that one of the preventive measures includes quarantine of the region located as far as three km away from the village, where the infection occurred.

Everyone passing through the village undergoes disinfection, said Kabil. If necessary, access to the village would be blocked, said he.

Kabil said that citizens were out of danger, as poultry products from the affected region were no longer sold. Only two people came in contact with the infected birds and were under medical surveillance, said Kabil.

Municipalities located close to the Danube River would be monitored as a preventive measure as well, said Kabil. In the beginning of the year several dead swans carrying the bird flu virus were found close to the river.
