Lab testing of samples from birds infected with bird flu show the infection might be caused by one of the less dangerous virus types.

Tests would be repeated for more certainty, head of the National Veterinary Medical Service Zheko Baichev said.

Results did not confirm the presence of the dangerous for humans H5N1 virus in the bodies of dead birds found in Kurdzhali's Slunchogled village. The infection was the first outbreak of bird flu among domestic birds in Bulgaria.

All birds in the village were culled, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported. Agriculture Ministry is ready to pay compensation to the owners, a ministry press release said.

Additional measures included disinfection and quarantine, Agriculture Minister Nihat Kabil said.

Residents of the village would undergo medical examination, BTA reported.
