ADDITIONAL FUNDS ALLOCATED FOR BIRD FLU PREVENTION IN BULGARIA

Bulgaria's crisis headquarters allocated additional 50 000 leva for measures against the spread of bird flu in Bulgaria.

Last week veterinarians confirmed the first bird flu outbreak among domestic birds in Slunchogled village. All birds in the village were culled and veterinarians said that the outbreak was under control.

The funds would be used for protective clothing and disinfectants, Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Bird owners from the region would receive 14 555 leva compensation for the destroyed poultry, Agriculture Minister Nihat Kabil said.

By tomorrow labs would have the results from analysed bird samples. The first test results revealed the virus that caused the infection was not of the dangerous for humans H5N1 type.

As a preventive measures hospitals in Sofia and Varna have been provided with tamiflu, the medicine used to counter bird flu, Health Minister Radoslav Gaidarski said.
