The oil spill that polluted Bulgaria's Danube River region originated in Prahovo refinery, a Serbian agriculture ministry press release said, as quoted by mediapool.bg.

The spill entered the Bulgarian part of the Danube on October 2. The total length of the spill was 140 km, mediapool.bg said. The spill consisted of petroleum and fuel oil.

A refinery failure caused the spill, mediapool.bg said. "Unestablished quantity of oil products flowed into the Danube," the press release said.

Serbia's state water inspectorate said that it received a signal concerning the spill as late as the evening of October 2.

The spill passed 200 m away from the Kozlodui nuclear power plant facilities, mediapool.bg said, but failed polluting the riverbank near the plant.

Bulgarian authorities were setting up fences to stop the oil spills, mediapool.bg said. A ship would collect the spill.
