EU citizens will find it easier to discover Bulgaria and Romania as tourism destinations after the two countries' EU accession on January 1 2007.
Bulgaria was offering more than the usual beach holiday, the most circulated German magazine ADAC Motorwelt said. The country had four big winter resorts, among which Borovets in the Rila Mountain.
The resort used to be summer residence of local aristocracy. Nowadays it was offering ski tracks of all difficulty levels that run down from 2700 m above the sea level, the magazine said.
Pamporovo resort in the Rhodopi Mountain, Bansko in Pirin Mountain and Vitosha Mountain are other winter tourism opportunities. Bansko was brand new resort, developed in the past several years and Vitosha Mountain was just half an hour away from the capital of Sofia, the report said.
More than 500 settlements in Bulgaria were famous as health resorts, the magazine said. Thracians, Romans and Greeks used to visit the places. The most contemporary spa resorts are located along the Black Sea cost.
Foreign tourists had to have in mind that often road signs outside the main roads were only written in Cyrillic, the magazine said.
Still, it was worth visiting Rila Monastery or Rose Valley, where the raw material for European perfumery industry was cultivated.
