INTERNET PROVIDERS IN BULGARIA PUSHED TO LIMIT UNLICENSED CONTENT DISTRIBUTION

An Interior Ministry order limited the access of Bulgarian Telecommunications Company (BTC) clients to the content of torrent tracker arenabg.com.

BTC confirmed the restrictions on March 16, mediapool.bg reported.

Head of the directorate for fight against computer crime Yavor Kolev said that all internet providers received orders to stop providing access to arenabg.com.

The order followed a trial involving copyright violation. A number of arrests occurred in the spring of 2006, related to the torrent tracker.

Deputy head of Sofia's investigative service Svetoslav Vassilev said that during an operation the owner of arenabg.com was arrested.

At the moment the torrent tracker is the largest Bulgarian website providing for free film, music, games and software files.

The Interior Ministry  said that over the past two years Bulgaria has put maximum effort in dealing with piracy and in protecting copyrighted work of Bulgarian and foreign authors.

Limiting access to websites is unpopular measure in Bulgaria but widely used in Europe, Interior Ministry said.
