The Institute of Microbiology of the Bulgarian Academy of Science will take part in an international project looking for ways to deal with the bird flu virus.
The project will include three zones, Africa, the Danube River valley and Cambodia.
It will study ecological conditions, humidity, temperatures and other factors that contribute to the survival of the lethal strain H5N1 of the virus, Focus news agency said.
Director of Institute of Microbiology Angel Gulubov said that so far scientist kew that the bird flu virus survived in the cold waters near the Scandinavian peninsula and migratory birds carried them during their southward migration.
Gulubov said that bird flue could be completely defeated. Research had to produce results fast as the virus had the ability to mutate, he said.
The FAO urged heightened preparedness and surveillance amid signs that a mutant strain of the deadly bird flu virus is spreading in Asia and beyond.
The funding is provided under the foreign military sales programme of the US army's Program Executive Office of Simulation, Training and Instrumentation.
