A double for McLaren

Reigning and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso of Spain with McLaren took his revenge on Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen on April 8 at the Malaysian Grand Prix, the second Formula One of the season.

The revenge was made sweeter because McLaren's second driver, the UK's Lewis Hamilton, finished second after Alonso, making April 8 McLaren's day.

It was Alonso's 16th victory of his career.

With the double win on the Sepang track, McLaren now tops both the Drivers and Constructors tables. On the Drivers Table, Alonso is first with 18 points, followed by Raikkonen with 16 points and Hamilton with 14 points.

The situation is similar with the Constructors standings. Vodafone McLaren Mercedes leads with 32 points, putting it ahead of Ferrari's 23 points. BMW Sauber is in third with 10 points.

The April 8th win was McLaren's 41st one-two victory the first since the 2005 Brazilian Grand Prix. Alonso's main rival for the title, Raikkonen, finished third, 18 seconds behind him. Fourth was Nick Heidfeld from BMW Sauber, followed by Ferrari's second driver Felipe Massa.

The two-stop strategy worked well for Alonso and Hamilton against the main rivals from Ferrari. Lewis recorded the fastest lap of the race with 1:36.701 on lap 22, statistic shows.

Despite his second position at the start, Alonso outflanked the leader Massa, took the lead and kept it until the end. All of this happened on the first lap of the race, which turned to be decisive.

Hamilton started as fourth but swiftly manged to overtake both Massa and Raikkonen, who started third.

Alonso's win was crucial for McLaren since Raikkonen grabbed the win at the first race of the season in Australia on March 18, leaving Alonso second. In Australia, Raikkonen won without any problems and specialists were predicting a tough season for Alonso and almost a lost title. That's why Alonso was overwhelmed with emotion after the Malaysian win.

"It is a perfect result, a dream," said Alonso, as quoted by the BBC. "This is such a tough race but we were relaxed in the end. It is a wonderful surprise after such a short time with McLaren. To have wins with different teams is very special."

Indeed, this was a maiden win for Alonso, and not only because it was his first of the season. After the end of last year's season, Alonso left Renault and joined McLaren.

"It's a dream come true after winning with Renault. I am proud of the team," Alonso told a news conference after the race.

The other winner was Hamilton who joined Formula One this season and won a place on the podium in both of the first races.

"I actually never expected to be on the podium in the first two races," Hamilton said.

Despite his first position, Massa's performance was a disappointment for Ferrari. He was outflanked by BMW's Heidfeld who finished fourth ahead of Massa.

The next race is in Bahrain on April 15, and for sure Ferrari will be desperate to get back on the circuit for the title. Everybody expects another wonderful performance by Alonso and Hamilton, a pressure point that eventually might turn against them.
