Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin and European commissioner for external relations Benita Ferrero- Waldner will discuss the trial of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for intentional HIV infection in Libya.
Kalfin is in Luxembourg, where he is taking part in the summit of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.
The trial of the nurses is not listed as an item on the summit's agenda but Kalfin will discuss the issue separately with Ferrero-Waldner.
Kalfin said that another trial involving the nurses, the one of defamation that Libyan officers launched, was absurd. The nurses said that Libyan officers tortured them into confessing guilt for the infection and now six officers decided to sue them and demand compensation for the claims.
Adding new charges does nothing to solve the case, Kalfin said. Though the defamation trial is legally justified, it only hinders fast resolution, he said.
Ministers will meet in Luxembourg on April 23 and 24. They will discuss relations between the EU and US, as well as EU's position on the death penalty.
Peace in the Middle East will also feature among the topics of discussion. Kalfin will present information on the upcoming visit of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to Bulgaria.
