The number of Eastern European immigrants to the UK increased by 25 per cent after the beginning of 2007, media reports quoted an official British report as saying.
The main reason for the increase was the EU accession of Bulgaria and Romania, according to a UK cabinet report.
Nearly 50 000 immigrants from the two countries arrived in the UK every month in the past four months of 2007, the report said, as quoted by Bulgarian National Radio (BNR). The report quotes data from UK ports and airports.
According to the report, nearly 540 000 citizens of the eight Eastern European countries that joined the EU in 2004 entered the UK in the first three months of 2006.
The number of Eastern Europeans who entered the UK during the same period in 2007 was 670 000.
These results may vindicate fears that arose last year in the UK of a huge influx of immigrants, the reports said.
