24 PER CENT OF BULGARIA'S CHILDREN OBESE

Some 24 per cent of Bulgarian children aged between seven and 10 are obese.

Nutrition specialist Stefka Petrova said, as quoted by Focus news agency, that 17.2 per cent of children during puberty were obese, 20 per cent of children after puberty were overweight and five per cent of children after puberty were obese.

About 90 per cent of children at school buy colas and crisps for breakfast, Petrova said, as quoted by Focus news agency.

An overweight population and obesity is a huge problem in all European countries. To counteract the widespread easy and cheap unhealthy snacking options, many countries give children free fruit and vegetables. There is a special European programme addressing the problem.

In addition, children in most European countries drink more milk and take in larger quantity of calcium than in Bulgaria.
