During a joint operation, Spanish and Bulgarian police detained three Bulgarian citizens, two men and a woman, in the Spanish town of Alcala de Henares, near Madrid.

Police seized 8.520kg of heroin from the detainees, Spanish newspaper Terra reported. The cache was worth more than two million euro.

The operation began following information from Bulgaria's national service for the fight against organised crime.

According to Terra, the arrested were part of a Bulgarian criminal group of heroin traders throughout Europe.

The woman, eight months pregnant, was set free after giving testimony. The men will remain under arrest and will undergo questioning.

Bulgarian and Spanish police are partners in the fight against organised crime, Terra said.
