Japan will lend Bulgaria 238 million euro for the construction of two terminals handling container ships in its Black Sea ports of Bourgas and Varna, Bulgaria's Foreign Affairs Ministry said on February 11 2008.
The loan will be extended through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), the ministry said in a statement after foreign minister Ivaylo Kalfin met with Japan's ambassador om Sofia, Tsuneharu Takeda.
The two terminals would be built at the Varna-Iztok and Bourgas-Zapad ports by 2015, the ministry said.
The loan would further strengthen the economic ties between the two countries, as well as boost co-operation in the Black Sea region, Kalfin said in the statement.
Bulgarian shipping company Navibulgar will sell some of its current ships to help finance the deal. Five ships have so far been sold.
Strong public opposition to price hikes prompted Prime Minister Boiko Borissov to axe the Finance Ministry proposal to increase the excise duty on spirits, but MPs have put it back on the agenda.
