Call it Bulgaria's March hare madness, because for the rest of the month, there is enough going on on the live music scene to rival what we've been promised for the summer.
Starting on Thursday the 13th at 7pm, with the support of the Instituto Cervantes Sofia and the Shalom Organisation of Jews in Bulgaria, the duo Shemuel Behar (baritone) and Raina Petrova (piano) will give a recital of Sephardic songs entitled Como la Rosa del Shabat. It will be held at the Jewish House of Culture in Sofia, 50 Alexander Stamboliiski Blvd (entrance is free).
Later the same evening, DJ Alex Raeva will spin her chill-out and minimal-house mixes at Yalta Club together with Yassen Kozev, the creator of Bulgaro, as part of the club's Thursday Live Sessions. The project brings top names on the Bulgarian music scene into a club setting every first and third Thursday of the month from 10.30pm; past artists include jazz-blues singer Beloslava.
And if you're still raring to go on Friday, check out DJs Matthew Dekay and Remy at Club Yalta, where the two "Dutch dance machines" will get you shaking off the stress of the week.
For a slightly less energetic evening, consider the concert by the vocal quartet Euphonia at the Boris Christoff Music Centre (43 Tsar Samuil Str, Sofia, tel: 02/ 987 35 92). Starting at 7pm on the 14th, it features two sopranos, a bass and a tenor in what has been called "a group unique on the Bulgarian cultural scene". They will present a sort of musical journey through time and place, singing works from traditional English and Irish tunes to spirituals to compositions by names like Daryl Runswick, Duke Ellington, Petko Stainov and Vic Nees.
On Saturday, DJ Food is at 4km Party Centre. He is a member of Ninja Tune, the English institution of down-tempo jazzy-break hip-hop sounds. Nassekomix Live, DJ Stoyan, Laylla Dane, Error Beauty and Funkusion will be mixing on behalf of the Bulgarian scene.
Giving three concerts around the country, the Roy Powell Peak Experience Trio will be sharing their jazz/rock/funk/fusion beats on March 13 in the Plenarna Zala in Rousse; at Social Jazz Club in Sofia on the 14th from 9.30pm, and at the club Petnoto in Plovdiv on March 15. With members from Bulgaria, England and Norway, the trio is as diverse and culturally rich as its music.
And before the month is up, there will be more in the way of English music presence in Bulgaria, with the arrival of the Saint Edmundsbury Cathedral Choir. Comprised of 12 men and 20 boys, the group will perform sacred music and Bulgarian folk tunes on March 27 at Sveti Yosif Cathedral in Sofia at 7pm, and on March 29 at the Alexander Nevski Crypt at 6.30pm. Both concerts are free-of-charge.
For those who feel nostalgic about the music of the likes of Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Soft Cell or Human League, Sofia's Yalta Club starts a new series of events.
