Sofia municipality allocated 400 000 leva to create a suitable environment for children with physical disabilities in five kindergartens and eight schools. The construction will take place during this summer, the city hall said in a media statement on August 10.
The kindergartens that will be re-constructed are kindergarten Nr.8 in Krasno Selo district, Nr.51 in Ilinden, Nr.13 in Iskur, Nr.39 in Ovcha Kupel and the specialised kindergarten for children with special educational needs Nr.112 in Vitosha neighborhood. The schools that will be prepared to host children with disabilities are 133rd school in Sredets district, 136th in Vuzrazhdane, Sofia Mathematical High School in Oborishte, 148th in Slatina, 126th in Triaditsa, 123rd in Krasna Polyana, 101st in Nadezhda and 125th in Mladost.
The money will be allocated from the municipality's special privatisation fund. The schools and kindergartens were picked after district administrations filed for the funding because the facilities were used by handicapped children, the city hall said.
So far, 53 schools have been equipped for hosting children with physical disabilities in Sofia. In March 2008, the city hall started the campaign Schools Without Barriers to collect funds for equipping the educational centres with the necessary installations. It collected about 30 000 leva that will be spent on creating such equipment in kindergarten Nr.17 in Mladost district, the city said.
With a new points-based system to distribute available places in kindergartens, Sofia municipality hopes to avoid the chaos that followed last year's registration period.
