Following a policy change introduced on August 25 2008, the registration of .bg domains can now be done without "providing grounds for the use of the name", the registrar register.bg announced on August 26.
Previously, in order to register a .bg domain, one had to provide proof of ownership or right of use of the name under one of a number of categories. These categories included registration as a company, patent registration or application for a patent or ISBN publication registration, among others.
As a result of the August 25 decision, registrations will be accepted at the risk of those filing the application, register.bg announced, with a dispute committee handling any disputes that would arise.
The new registration system is a dual system, with so-called protected and unprotected domain registrations. Protected domain registrations are those registered with additional documents, providing proof of the right to use the name. Protected domain registrations cannot be appealed with the dispute committee, a register.bg spokesperson told The Sofia Echo.
Unprotected domain registrations are registrations where these documents have not been provided; these domains can be appealed by a third party, who would have to provide proof of ownership or right of use of the name that pre-dates the domain registration.
Prices of .bg domain registrations remain 30 euro a year, without VAT.
