Nestle re-locates ice-cream production to Bulgaria

Nestle food giant, which makes food products in Bulgaria, is also moving its ice-cream production from Romania to its local factory in Varna, company representatives from the two neighbouring countries said as quoted by Bulgarian-language daily Dnevnik on September 3.

The decision was taken in the wake of the company's re-organisation but also because Bulgaria's biggest Black Sea city of Varna is very near to Romania's capital, Bucharest, and is convenient from a transport and logistical point of view, Nestle representatives said.

The company invested huge amounts in modernising and expanding its Varna factory during recent years. Total investments currently reach about six million euro, Nestle said. It also plans to pour more money in new production lines, as well as in modernising and expanding existing productions. According to the company, its strategy foresees the introduction of innovative decisions for Bulgaria and the Balkan region.

In coming weeks the company will begin terminating its ice-cream production in Romania. Production towards the next summer season will take place in Bulgaria.

Varna factory will mainly make ice-cream for Bulgaria and Romania but it will also keep the existing export to Macedonia, Georgia, Albania and some other Balkan countries. The quantity produced for Bulgaria's market will be approximately the same as the export market, the company said.
