Kosovo PM Thaci hopes for Arab recognitions

Kosovo prime minister Hashim Thaci has promised that more Islamic states will recognise Kosovo. "This is an outcome of our diplomatic efforts and the support of our international partners," Thaci told reporters on October 15, commenting on the announcement by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) earlier in the day that it had recognised Kosovo.

Thaci said this latest recognition reflected Kosovo's clear vision and diplomatic influence. He said the country's vision is based on implementing democratic reforms and integrating in the European Union and Nato.

"We truly believe that the UAE's recognition will encourage other Arab countries to do the same," he said.

Thaci added that Kosovo will develop bilateral relations with the UAE, which is the first Arab country to recognise Kosovo.

Public opinion in Kosovo has been restive due to the lack of recognition from the Arab world, which shares the same religious heritage as Kosovo's majority population.

UAE recognition brought the number of states that have formally recognised Kosovo to 51.
