Filmini 2.0 short film festival opens doors on October 22

Filmini 2.0, a festival to showcase short films from around the world, takes place in Sofia at Dom na Kinoto and the Euro-Bulgarian Cultural Centre from October 22 to 26 2008. The event includes meetings with filmmakers and film buffs from many countries, workshops on the latest developments in filmmaking and a workshop on animation.

A special advance screening will take place on October 21 at The Red House Centre for Culture and Debate in Sofia. The venue has made its own selection of films from the festival to be projected - all with English subtitles. The show starts at 7.30pm.

On October 23, Spain enters the spotlight, with a roundtable discussion led by stop-motion animation specialist Tomás Conde Rodríguez at 6.30pm, held at the Instituto Cervantes (1 Suborna Str, Sofia), and a special eye at Spanish short films. Rodríguez is the head of the Galician production house Algarabía Animación and a contributing partner at the Consorcio Audiovisual de Galicia. Being shown that same day, at 9pm Dom na Kinoto, are La revuelta de los mouses (directed by David Gen, 2007, 20'), Darío y Verónica (Alberto Rodriguez de la Fuente, 2007, 17'), O Hospital (Ivan Seoane, 2007, 20') and Leo (Fernando Cortizo Rodriguez, 2007, 13').

British animator Phil Mulloy will also be present, holding, on invitation of the British Council, a four-day workshop on animation techniques.

This is the second time that Filmini is being held in Bulgaria. About 900 short films from South America, Brazil, Cuba, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Western and Central Europe, the Caucasian region, the Middle East, including Iran, and the Balkan Peninsula were submitted for the festival, of which 70 were chosen for screening.

Filmini 2008 pays special attention to animation, with films that have received British Animation Awards also being presented. Many Bulgarian animators applied for this category. Experimental film will also be featured. The best Bulgarian film will receive the award of Kodak Cinelabs Bulgaria, comprised of a video camera, a film lens and laboratory services to the amount of 2000 euro.

Dom na Kinoto is at 37 Ekzarh Yosif Str in Sofia; the Euro-Bulgarian Cultural Centre is at 17 Alexander Stamboliiski Blvd in Sofia.
