Sofia municipal council will vote on October 23 on a motion to provide free wireless internet (wi-fi) in several public parks in the city. The proposed areas where free internet would be available around the clock are Gradska Gradina, the square around Alexander Nevsky cathedral, the park around St Sofia church, the entrance to the Borissovata Gradina, Banska Gradina and the small park next to the Sofia University.
To install the system and furnish all the required facilities, the municipality will pay about 180 000 leva from its budget surplus. The proposition was first put on the table by Orlin Ivanov, Marlina Edreva and Angel Djambazki from Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (abbreviated as GERB in Bulgarian). The internet provider will be selected from a competition organised by the city administration.
Should Sofia finally agree for the systems to be installed, the residents and visitors of the city will no doubt benefit from this development as the internet cafes around Sofia are rather few and far in between, as well as routinely full.
If those public park areas are granted the permit for the free wireless, they will be provided with 24 hour security. It is also understood that those responsible for installing the internet in the parks will be also responsible for maintaining the surrounding area and keeping the parks tidy and clean.
