Fifa rejects Kosovo football body application

Sat, Oct 25 2008 13:27 CET 2136 Views 1 Comment

Fifa's executive committee has rejected an affiliation application by the Kosovo football association, saying that it failed to comply with an article of the Fifa statutes that says that only "an independent state recognised by the international community" may be admitted.

Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in February 2008. A total of 51 of 192 United Nations member states have said that they recognise Kosovo as independent, but Serbia has succeeded in winning a UN General Assembly resolution referring the question of Kosovo's self-declared independence to the International Court of Justice.

Kosovo's football team postdates the breakup of Yugoslavia and the former province's coming under UN administration after the 1990s wars in the territory. The team mainly has played club matches, but has played against a few national football teams: Albania, Monaco, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Fifa, in a statement after its executive committee meeting on October 23 and 24 2008, said that its decision about Kosovo meant that the team "cannot play any friendly matches".

The official website of the Football Federation of Kosova has a category called "partners" with the logos of Uefa and Fifa, neither of which recognise it.

Kosovo has an Olympic committee but is not a member of the IOC and cannot take part in summer or winter Olympics, because similar Olympic rules require UN recognition of an applicant.
