On Sunday November 23, for the first time in Sofia, a full-contact game of American football will take place between the local Team Sofia and their Romanian guests, the Bucharest Warriors. Not quite the NFL, but something in a country where the popularity of the sports appears to be limited to expats mostly.
The match is scheduled to kick off at the National Sports Academy pitch in Studentski Grad at 11am, with the US embassy deputy chief of mission Alexander Karagiannis scheduled to make the ceremonial coin toss. To get there, one can take busses 94 or 280, both of which pass by Orlov Most (Eagles Bridge).
Both teams will be fully kitted out with the appropriate body pads and will play under American rules and regulations. Before and after the match, players and fans will be able to participate in the traditional for American football tailgate - food and drinks party.
Founded in 2007, Team Sofia is so far the only registered and practicing American football side in Bulgaria. This will be the team's third international match, its two previous matches coming against the Istanbul Cavaliers.
The first time the teams met in Turkey and then in Razlog, and Team Sofia and the Istanbul Cavaliers have a strong bond of friendship between them. This is a chance for the Sofia outfit to meet and make friends with their Romanian "colleagues" from Bucharest.
Hardly the derby of the weekend, but definitely worth the beer and chips. Mind yourselves however, as the Saturday forecast is 8 inches of snow and -7C and for Sunday, the temperatures will slump to -9C. It will be highly advisable for you to get some kit of you own.
Team Sofia aim to end the season in style. After defeating the Bucharest Warriors away, they are eyeing another victory against a Romanian side, this time 'at home'.
