See You at the Eiffel Tower, the most recent film to come out of the stellar Bulgarian production house Agitprop, will be showing at Kinomania 2008 on November 28. Its Bulgarian premiere succeeds its November 21 2008 world premiere screening at the 21st international documentary film festival amsterdam (IDFA), as part of the Reflecting Images panorama.
Directed by Valentin Vulchev and produced by Martichka Bozhilova, the full-length documentary tells the story of a "forgotten and forbidden film" by Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens, now dead, a press release from Agitprop read.
A first for the production company, this film weaves the director into the scenario. Filmed in six European countries, See You at the Eiffel Tower traces the travels of director Vulchev himself, in his meetings with Ivens' screenwriter, cameraman and girlfriend Marion Michelle (aka, Marion Koblitz), who was, in 2007, 93 years old and ready to show Vulchev the places where she and Ivens filmed.
The film follows Vulchev and Marion's voyage in time, encountering "then" (the post-World War 2 Europe of Ivens and Marion) and "now" (the 18-years post-communist Europe of Vulchev and Marion).
Cameramen for this project, version 2008, are Georgi Bogdanov and Boris Missirkov, whose movie portfolio includes other Agitprop films like Georgi and the Butterflies, The Mosquito Problem & Other Stories and Corridor #8.
Georgi and the Butterflies won the Silver Wolf Prize at the 2004 IDFA. Ivens' films did not receive any awards, but the IDFA annually confers the VPRO Joris Ivens Award to a full-length documentary.
The Bulgarian premiere of See You at the Eiffel Tower (Среща при Айфеловата кула) is at Lumière Cinema in Sofia at 7pm on November 28.
