Levski Sofia goes top of the league after CSKA stumble

Levski Sofia football club will go into the three-month winter break as leaders of Bulgaria's top division after beating mid-table Pirin Blagoevgrad 2-0 on November 29, while arch-rivals CSKA Sofia managed only a 2-2 draw with Lokomotiv Mezdra a day earlier.

Georgi Ivanov, the 32-year-old striker now in his fourth spell with the club where he is fourth on the all-time scorer list, bagged both goals to send Levski to the top of the table with 33 points, one more than CSKA.

After a goalless first half, Levski head coach Emil Velev made two substitutions, sending Ivanov and Macedonian midfielder Darko Tasevski on, which proved the turning point for the match.

Velev said after the game: "The players started sluggishly, but I am happy that the subsitutes did well. We were on the attack the entire second half and deserved the win."

Ivanov, who was substituted shortly after his second goal with an injury, is expected to recover in time for the team's last match this year, the quarterfinal of the Bulgarian Cup against fellow top division club Sliven on December 7.
